Kobus was born on the 16 th May 1964. He completed his schooling at Paarl Gymnasium in 1985. At this time he played Rugby for Boland and represented them 12 times. Kobus then moved to Western Transvaal and played 18 games for them before moving to Goudstad Teachers Training College in Johannesburg.
In 1988, while a student at Goudstad, he was chosen to play for Transvaal for the first time. In 1991, he played in his first of four consecutive Currie Cup Finals. In 1992 he toured Britain and Italy with Transvaal. He was in the Transvaal team that won the 1993 and 1994 Lion Cup Finals, as well as the 1993 Super Ten. Kobus scored 21 tries in 135 games for Transvaal.
Kobus received his Springbok Cap for the first time in 1993; he played for a total of 20 tests for the Boks, including the victorious 1995 World Cup Final. Kobus played 32 games for the Boks altogether.
In 1996 Kobus established Wiesenhof Coffees. While operating his first Coffee Shop in the East Rand Mall, previously part of another Franchise Group, he found that he received no support from the Franchiser. This resulted in Kobus starting to import his own coffee beans to support his business. And this led to the creation of Wiesenhof Coffees, which now has 20 stores in operation.
In between his hectic schedule, Kobus is also a Sports Presenter on M Net, which he terms to be more of a hobby. Kobus is a sought after Motivational Speaker and Master of Ceremonies and is often invited to appear at numerous corporate functions and events.
